How do I record a trip? Tap Start before you pull away, then hold the End button when you park. Keep the phone anywhere in the car — mount, cupholder, or pocket. There is no live score on purpose: eyes on the road.
Why didn’t my trip get a score? Two floors have to be cleared. A recording under 30 seconds is thrown away entirely (it’s almost always an accidental Start tap). A trip with less than two minutes of actual driving, or under a quarter mile, is saved but left unscored, and it doesn’t count toward your averages or personal best. A trip whose sensor data came up short — usually because the phone locked and iOS throttled the accelerometer — is also left unscored rather than scored from a fraction of the drive.
What does the smoothness score measure? Jerk: how fast your acceleration changes. Smooth, progressive inputs score high; sudden ones score low. Picking up your phone mid-drive also costs points, up to a limit. It is a comfort and coaching metric, not a safety rating, and it is not an assessment of how safe a driver you are.
Do I need an account? No. Everything works without one, and trips stay on your phone. Signing in with Apple backs your trips up so they survive a lost or replaced phone.
Why does DriveSafe want location access “Always”? So recording keeps working with the screen off or the app in the background — otherwise your route stops the moment you lock the phone. If you decline it, recording still works while the app is open. Location is only read between Start and the end of the trip.
Location is turned off and now I can’t start a trip. Open iOS Settings → DriveSafe → Location and choose “Always” (or “While Using the App”). The app’s Start button will offer to take you there.
How do I delete my data? Settings → Account → Delete account removes your account, every synced trip, and the local copies. See the privacy policy for the full breakdown.
My battery drained during a long drive. Continuous GPS at navigation accuracy is expensive. Plug in on drives over an hour.
