DriveSafe records your drives from your phone’s sensors and scores how smoothly
you drove. This page describes exactly what the app collects, where it goes, and
how to get rid of it. It is written from the app’s source code, not from a
template.
What DriveSafe reads from your phone
- Location (GPS). While a trip is recording, DriveSafe reads your position
about once a second to draw your route, measure distance, and work out where
you were driving rather than walking or stopped. Recording continues with the
screen off, which is why the app asks for “Always” location access; iOS shows
the blue location indicator the whole time. Location is only read between the
moment you tap Start and the moment the trip ends.
- Accelerometer and gyroscope. While a trip is recording, DriveSafe reads
your phone’s motion sensors 20 times a second. This is the raw material for the
smoothness score — sudden inputs read as high jerk.
- Photo library. Only if you choose to add a profile photo, and only the one
image you pick. The app never browses your library on its own.
DriveSafe does not read your contacts, calendar, microphone, camera, health data,
messages, or browsing activity. It contains no advertising and no analytics or
tracking SDKs of any kind.
What is stored on your phone
Everything below stays on your device and is never uploaded:
- Your trips, including full routes, while you are using DriveSafe without an
account.
- Your profile photo.
- Your reaction-check history and settings.
Deleting the app removes all of it.
What is stored on our server
If you sign in with Apple, your trips are backed up to our database (hosted by
Supabase) so they survive a lost or replaced phone. Each trip row holds:
- start and end time, duration, distance, and the time zone the drive happened in
- your smoothness score and the score-over-time trace behind it
- the notable events found in the drive (hard braking, cornering, phone handling)
and where in the drive they happened
- your route, as a list of coordinates each tagged with a smoothness value
Your account itself holds only what is needed to sign you in and address you by
name: the account identifier Apple gives us, the email address Apple shares (if
you chose Apple’s “Hide My Email”, we only ever see the relay address), and the
first and last name you enter.
Every trip row is tied to your account and protected by row-level security, so
one account cannot read another’s data. Your profile photo is not uploaded.
Signing in is optional. The whole app works without an account, and trips
recorded without one stay on the phone. The first time you sign in, DriveSafe
asks whether trips already on the phone belong to you: choose “Add” and they are
uploaded to your account, choose “Don’t add” and they are deleted from the phone.
What we never do
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not share it with advertisers, data brokers, or any third party, and we
do not use it to track you across other apps or websites.
- We do not use your driving data to set anyone’s insurance rates, and we do not
give it to insurers or employers.
The only third party involved is Supabase, which hosts the database and
authentication on our behalf and does not use your data for its own purposes.
Deleting your data
- In the app: Settings → Account → Delete account. This permanently deletes
your account, every trip synced to it, and the copies on your phone. It cannot
be undone.
- Deleting a single trip: swipe or long-press a trip in Recent trips, or tap
Discard on a debrief.
- Signing out clears this account’s trips from the phone but keeps them on the
server, so they come back when you sign in again.
- Uninstalling removes everything on the phone. If you had an account, use
Delete account first to remove the server copy too.
Children
DriveSafe is meant for licensed drivers and drivers with a learner’s permit. It is
not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.
Changes
If this policy changes in a way that affects what we collect, the updated version
will be published here before the change ships in an app update.
